The Executive Headshot · The Quiet Luxury Edition
By Tony Taafe
Command attention. Don’t demand it.
Presence that feels confident and approachable
There’s a certain presence that can draw you into a striking photograph. It’s confident without being overbearing, assured without trying too hard. You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to command attention. Often, the person who looks most comfortable has the strongest presence.
That same presence can come through in a headshot. You don’t need to know how to create it yourself. During your session, I’ll guide you through the small adjustments in posture and expression that help you look relaxed, authoritative and approachable.
Some photographs have a particular kind of confidence. The person looks completely at ease. You notice them. You stay with the expression. There is something assured about it, and enough warmth to make you want to know more.
That’s what your headshot can do.
What quiet luxury means in a headshot
For me, quiet luxury headshots are defined by understated elegance, superior craftsmanship and timeless design. Those words describe a standard of care, from the way someone is directed during their session to the finishing of their final images.
It’s about care. Attending to the small details. Not compromising on quality.
A simple photograph gives those details considerable responsibility. The light, the position of the shoulders, the expression and the composition all contribute to how the person comes across. A small adjustment can change the feeling of the whole image. Knowing what to adjust, and when to leave something alone, is part of the craft.
Lighting and expression make the difference
Lighting deserves particular attention. It gives a face shape and helps establish the character of the photograph. And as everybody’s face is different, the lighting should be adjusted to suit each person’s face.
Expression is king and asks for a different kind of attention. Confidence can appear too severe when it is pushed too far. A smile can look pleasant and still feel disconnected from the person wearing it. The fun is in finding expressions that feel assured, confident, approachable and genuine. That’s when we’ve hit the jackpot.
Personal direction for your executive headshot
That takes personal direction. People arrive with different personalities, different levels of comfort and different ideas about how they want to be seen. There has to be room for those differences. An executive headshot should have a clear purpose while still allowing the individual to be present.
I also want clients to understand what we are creating together. I educate them during the session and curate the selection to the strongest images. Choosing the final images becomes a more informed decision when they can see what the details contribute.
Commanding attention is an appropriate ambition for an executive headshot. It can communicate presence and assurance while leaving room for warmth. Someone can look capable, comfortable and like a person you would enjoy meeting, all at once.
That is the quality I’m looking for. Headshots you return to because there is someone worth noticing in them. Commanding attention, not demanding it.
Finally, headshots you’ll love.
